Executive search starts with the mandate.

Define a leader’s authority and first-year expectations before searching.

Why does this role exist?

Growth, a new site and process change need different experience. Start with the business problem rather than the job title.

Define decision-making authority

Agree on the decisions the director owns, the teams they lead and how they work with the owners.

Name the expected outcomes

Set a few first-year priorities. These become the basis for the search and discussions of candidates’ experience.

Protect confidentiality

Decide what can be shared at each stage and who from the company participates in assessment.

Explore leadership decisions

Discuss context, alternatives, actions and consequences. The size of a previous employer alone does not prove a fit.

Prepare the first 90 days

Agree on meetings, access to information and immediate priorities before the leader starts. An appointment begins the working relationship.
